Spring is on our doorstep, even though the warmer weather hasn't arrived as quickly as expected. We would like to take advantage of this quieter period to inform you of the hunting results for the 2000 Season and to give you information for next season.

THE 2000 SEASON

Year 2000 was our first real year of operation of the two hunting territories, Chaloupe and Bell. The hunters who visited the Bell territory over the past years noticed improvements to the installations and the addition of equipment. The Chaloupe River territory greated benefitted from the construction of a 120-foot bridge. Despite the downpour experienced in November, 20 days of rain, the territory by the sea remained accessible at all times.

Nearly 200 000 $ was spent on the purchase of equipment and on the development of territories in year 2000. You will realize further on that our projects for year 2001 are equally ambitious.

The big blow-down at the end of October caused a lot of dammage. Unfortunately, we were unable to repair it all in November. This might have contributed to the difficult hunt experienced during the rut.

The hunting succes in year 2000 was similar to that in 1999, 1,81 deer/hunter vs 1,79. The success ratio for the bucks was 83% vs 86% in 1999.

The comparison chart shows the hunting success results for the two territories. When comparing the results, it is important to note that in September we receive a lot more hunters at Chaloupe River than at Bell River, and that only the camp at Dauphinée is used during this period.

CHALOUPE RIVER TERRITORY

  September October November Total
Hunters 122 62 166 350
Bucks 204 79 262 545
Does 33 22 28 83
Fawns 1 3 5 9
Total 238 104 295 637
Succes 1.95 1.68 1.78 1.82

Important Points

- 79% of the bucks killed were 6 points and more, vs. 65% in 1999.
- 79% were 6 points and more in September, 64% in October and 85% in November.
- The heaviest buck was killed in September and weighed 172 pounds gutted.

The following table compares the results of year 2000 with those of 1999.

#Points 6 & 7 8 & 9 10 & more
  99 00 99 00 99 00
  N % N % N % N % N % N %
September 51 26 53 26 53 27 96 47 3 2 12 6
October 31 39 22 28 22 28 28 35 1 1 1 1
November 82 31 63 24 98 38 139 53 10 4 21 8
Total 164 31 138 25 173 32 263 48 14 3 34 6

The hunting results were not as good for the 6 and 7 points, but the results for the 8 and more largely compensated for this decrease. The hunt may have looked more difficult in November, however, this was mainly due to the temperature and to the late rut. Overall, the 2000 season was better than the 1999 season.

RIVER BELL TERRITORY

  September October November Total
Hunters 27 120 203 350
Bucks 46 172 319 537
Does 8 45 30 83
Fawns 0 5 5 10
Total 54 222 354 630
Succes 2.00 1.85 1.74 1.80

Important Points

- 78% of the bucks killed were 6 points and more vs 74% in 1999.
- 94% were 6 points and more in September, 71% in October and 79% in November.
- The heaviest buck was killed in November and weighed 192 pounds gutted.

The following table compares the 2000 results with those of 1999.

#Points 6 & 7 8 & 9 10 & more
  99 00 99 00 99 00
  N % N % N % N % N % N %
September 18 38 10 22 18 38 24 52 - - 9 20
October 45 37 65 38 33 27 53 31 - - 3 2
November 115 36 89 28 124 39 140 44 9 3 22 7
Total 178 36 164 31 175 36 217 41 9 2 34 6

We can conclude the following:

- The collection of trophies in November did not meet our expectations given the increase of the herd.
- We noticed a decrease in the collection of 6 & 7 points in November, like at Chaloupe River. However, the increase in the success rate for the 8 & 9 points (+ 5%) is low when compared to Chaloupe (+15%).

We believe that these results are mainly due to the blow-down at the end of October which caused major damage to the Bell River territory. Many areas were hardly accessible in November and the biggest trophies remained hidden in the fallen trees.

Nevertheless, the fallen trees provided an abundent food supply to the deer this past winter. We should be witness to a return in force of trophies in 2001.

The last table compares our hunting results for year 2000 with those of the island.

  ISLAND CERF-SAU
BUCKS 5930 71% 1082 85%
DOES 1882 23% 166 13%
FAWNS 545 7% 19 2%
TOTAL 8357   1267
SUCCES 1.76 1.81

As you will note, the success rate is similar, our advantage is mainly at the level of the collection of bucks, 85% vs 71%.

2001 SEASON

What does the 2001 season have in store for us?

Winter 2001

It is always risky to predict hunting results months in advance. The 2000 season proved to be a very good example.

There was a heavy accumulation of snow on the east end of the island. Some friends spent a week at the camp at the beginning of April. They saw a lot of deer in the territory by the sea. There was no freezing rain during the winter. The trails in the winter habitat looked like thruways. The herd seems to be in good health.

The winter kill will be determined with the arrival of the spring thaw. Meanwhile, we remain optimistic since there is little snow along the seaside and the blow-down will provide abundent nourishment for a long while.

Firearms for Non-residents

The measures regarding the declaration of firearms for non-resident hunters came into effect in year 2001. Actually, all firearms entering Canada must be declared at customs. We will facilitate this procedure for you as much as possible.

The declaration form will be sent to you at the same time as your final invoice. It will be accompanied by an explanatory flyer. In order to hasten procedures at customs, you must fill in the form before arriving at the customs office. Then all you will have to do is sign the declaration before the customs officer and pay the 50 $ fee.

This amount was already calculated in the 2001 prices, so we will subtract that amount on the final invoice.

Improvements

In 2001, we will continue our equipment improvement program that was begun last year.

We will add 2 trucks to our fleet and at least 2 ATV's. We plan the construction of 1 bridge in the Bell territory and the rebuilding of 3 others in the Chaloupe and Bell territories. We will also make some renovations on existing buildings.

A lot of work will be done to the roads and to the paths. We plan on hiring 5 or 6 men, for a period of 2 months, in order to repair the damage caused by the October blow-down. We will definately take advantage of our heavy equipment.

The budget reserved for the improvement to the equipment will be in the order of 150 000 $ for this year.

As you can see, we are doing everything in our power to ensure the best possible conditions for your hunting trip. The only thing missing is the cooperation of Mother Nature.

Should you have any questions, you can reach me at the following telephone numbers, 514-252-5015 or 1-800-262-9496. Our web site should be ready by next month.

We thank you for your continued support. It will be a pleasure to help you plan your next hunting trip.
